Re: vu meters
You should probably be using Audacity 1.3.12 from here: http://audacityteam.org/download/ Audacity 1.2 is no longer supported particularly on newer Macs. If you have odd behavior, the oddness is going to get worse. You can install both versions safely, but only use one at a time. Audacity 1.3 Projec...

Re: Genre types?
I don't think I know anybody creating content that's actually tried to use the genre flags. That and they've come under attack for occasionally labeling politically sensitive genres.

Re: confused about stereo/mono imports
It's stereo at a very high quality bitrate and sounds terrific. Whenever we start getting system insanity, we try to get people off Audacity 1.2. 1.2 is no longer under support and is no longer patched, corrected or updated. Get Audacity 1.3. http://audacityteam.org/download/ You can install both ve...

Re: Audacity can't find ffmpeg and lame files
I think it's fascinating that the FFMpeg and Lame installed with different owners and different groups -- and again different from the owner of Audacity. And on my Leopard machine, all this went without a hitch. Badda-Boom, Badda-Bing. Export As > MP3 > OK > Done. [time passes] OK. On my personal ma...

Re: Audacity can't find ffmpeg and lame files
I tried installing lame and ffmpeg on one of the Snow Leopard machines that has multiple users and it didn't work at all. The two plugins installed with completely scrambled owners, groups, and permissions -- even though, if you read the permissions code rwxr_xr_x, the whole world should be able to ...

Re: Audacity can't find ffmpeg and lame files
Do you two that have the pages and pages of problems have two or more users on your machine? It's possible if you have an actual "administrator" user on your machine in addition to you, this install won't work.
I'm trying this out on the Snow Leopard machines at work.

Re: Recording from reel-to-reel
No. MIDI is machine control, not sound, and even if it fit, you would need an analog to digital converter for it to plug into the USB on your computer. You may need two adapters. http://www.amabilidade2002.com/audio17.htm Radio shack will supply an adapter from 1/4" stereo to 1/8" stereo (...

Re: Compare 2 files to discover audio delay
You had a fighting chance until you said the work was recorded by two difference cameras. That means the two signals are not identical. That's why it's good to know the configuration of the room, even if you can't change it. That gives us a push. Why is one of the sound tracks late? If they're not q...

Re: confused about stereo/mono imports
audio quality gets ruined if it randomly chooses to turn it into a mono track. That may be a monitoring problem. How are you listening? If you have something wrong with your speaker wiring, a mono show will sound really weird compared to a stereo show. You should almost not be able to tell. Does th...

Re: confused about stereo/mono imports
I don't think Audacity "chooses" to make the show mono. It opens up what's there. Have you tried to just "open" the shows instead of importing them? What are your Audacity settings? Edit > Preferences > 44100, 32-floating, Stereo? Audacity 1.2 comes out of the box in mono, not st...
