Re: Voice recorder that has a timestamp to the second
Because what you want tends to be called a "surveillance recorder" not a personal sound recorder. One of the obvious requirements is an accurate clock. How do you get that? The obvious solution is an "atomic clock" with a radio receiver or using an on-line timekeeper such as time...

Re: LAME vbr mp3 export wasting space
Quick note that "lame" is a UNIX standalone program. You don't have to use it with the Audacity wrapper. You can use it from the command line and there are many hundreds of options and settings.

Re: heavy clipping distortion on 24-bit export
The solution is intelligent management of filters, not just reordering, stacking, or piling in layers. Hot Keys, a Most Used Corral, or Favorites.

Re: no audio
I recently had the uncomfortable experience of "upgrading" my WinXP box to Service Pack III. It had on-board sound and it hasn't worked since. Windows complains that it can't find my sound card and demands drivers and other software. The support people gave me a stand-alone Blaster-type so...

Re: Mix and Render -> clipping
The grownups never produce and edit music just below clipping. That's asking for trouble. Leave generous headroom. Broadcast "natural" volume (for example) is -20dB in the US, -18dB in Europe. That's 20dB of room for explosions, applause, gunshots, and expressive music. Final level setting...

Re: Exporting to WAV
The AUP file is created when you Save a show. It's not a sound file. To get a real sound file, you have to Export one. Punctuation is dangerous in filenames because computers use those to point to folders and directories. That's one reason your sound file may not land where you think it's going to -...

If you're on a Windows machine, you can use Pamela Professional, Pamela Business, or Total Recorder. http://www.pamela.biz/en/download/ http://www.highcriteria.com/ The two low-end Pamela versions are intentionally crippled. Skype viciously takes control of your sound services while it's working, so...

Re: Recording from a source other than LP's, tapes, etc.
It's usually easier to do in XP than the other, newer machines. Those can be seriously messy.

Re: Hardware & Software for Stereo Recording on a Laptop
Some laptop computers allow you to switch the one connection between sensitive, mono, Mic-In and high-level, Stereo, Line-In. A lot will not. For those people, there is the hardware route by using a UCA-202, like this... http://www.kozco.com/tech/audacity/pix/UCA202.jpg This seems to be a good price...
