Try closing a bunch of things. Don't leave the email open. Close Skype. Restart the Mac with only Audacity running.

Audacity does not Save sound files. To get a sound file that you can edit in other programs you have to Export one.

File > Export > Microsoft WAV signed 16-bit.

WAV files are very universal. They play in all three computer platforms and billions of different editing programs.
