You do need to make sure that both Windows and Audacity are set. Yes, sometimes the computer will see a USB sound connection and assume it's a mono microphone. It's all in how the turntable announces itself when plugged in.
If you change an Audacity setting, restart Audacity.

My only serious objection to these gymnastics is the ability to dig yourself a hole -- to amplify the profile into clipping by accident. That's the one thing that Effect > Amplify would not do without user intervention.

That's the size of an hour stereo show in perfect quality WAV format. You must have done something wrong.

Yahoo Mail is 20MB. I've never used it because I have a web site and can present any size file.

Most email services cut you off at relatively small attached files. I think Yahoo is 10MB. So there may be two different problems right there.
