Re: Units in Waveform/Waveform(dB) PLEASE HELP!!!
The default measurements along the left edge are percent. 1 = 100%. 0.5 = 50%. 100% is where the sound channel runs out of numbers and stops dead. No further increase is possible. This can cause clipping and severe crunchy sound damage if you try to put a very loud show up there. Audacity throws mud...

Re: MP3 Exports (sometimes, more times not)
Let's split the process up. Change the Audacity Preferences to 44100, 16-bit, Stereo. Not 32-floating, not Mono. Restart Audacity. Download this brief music file. http://www.kozco.com/tech/piano2.wav Import it into Audacity and export an MP3. Only do it once. If it fails, write down exactly what hap...

Re: Recording "What I am hearing"
Since you haven't done anything serious yet, stop using Audacity 1.2 immediately and install 1.3. Audacity 1.2 is very old and no longer supported, patched, corrected, or updated. Audacity 1.2 can be unstable on newer computers. Download and install the latest Audacity 1.3 from here... http://audaci...

Re: External USB soundcard versus a USB microphone
There's two more problems with USB microphones. You can never get one than one USB cable away from the computer and you can't use a hub with multiple USB things like tablets, mice and cameras. A very common complaint with USB microphones is they're not loud enough and some of them can't be changed. ...

Re: How to increase volume/improve signal-to-noise ratio?
An easy way to automatically increase the music volume with no damage is Effect > Amplify (set to -1). Amplify will do whatever is needed to the whole show to make the one loudest peak -- either track -- come out to -1 dB. The tool defaults to 0 instead of -1 which is dangerous. This is not a volume...

Re: New install not working
The latest release version of Audacity, 1.3.13 is the only one that should be used with modern computers -- WinVista, Win7, Leopard, Snow Leopard. There were enough system changes to make earlier Audacity versions unstable.

Win7 comes out of the shrink wrap all set for video and sound conferencing. Echo cancellation, room suppression and auto gain control. If you don't turn it all off, it will completely mess up your live recording quality. Windows Enhanced Sound http://forum.audacityteam.org/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=4...
