Re: different bit rates when saving Mp3 files

It's not FFMpeg that manages MP3. It's lame.

In Audacity 1.3, you can set the bit rate at the export step. In Audacity 1.2, you have to set it in Audacity Preferences before you export.

Re: vocal removal tool to remove everything but the vocals?

That's called "Vocal Isolation" for your Googling pleasure. All these tools work on a Stereo show. If the original isn't in Stereo -- really good stereo, no MP3 downloads -- then you might have a small chance. This is one of those tools whose description sounds really cool on paper, but ra...

I'm saying you should be in Audacity 1.3. Are you?

Re: Audactiy Track Assistance Please

The higher quality podcasts don't do it that way. They call each other on Skype, but they record themselves locally on their computers. Then one sends the very high quality track to the other for combination into one show. The bubbly, gargling Skype sound never appears in the podcast.

Re: Audactiy Track Assistance Please

It does that as a production tool. If you need to apply effects, filters or corrections to one side, it's easily done by splitting left and right and correct each one individually. The lesser quality capture tools smash everything onto one track. If single voice corrections are needed, you have no s...

Re: recording using alternative to mic jack on laptop

Every time you do that "knocking down" thing, you increase the noise level. Yes it does work, but it's not optimal. Many field people keep attenuators in their run bags in just the condition that they have a hot signal and the only way to get into the mixer is through the Microphone connec...

Re: Researcher in need of some help with noise reduction

You can't magically inspect the whole show and derive all the special settings. The tools are good, but they're not sophisticated enough to do the noise reduction in groups or segments. We count ourselves lucky if we can deal with one single noise that's not too bad. You'll have to do each discrete ...

Re: Researcher in need of some help with noise reduction

You have the worst of all possible noise problems. A buzz or whine that moves over the course of the show, plus white noise. We will not be able to remove the hiss from the actual spoken words, but we can remove the hiss from between the words simulating a semi-quiet performance. We will never get b...

Re: capturing audio on reverb

You never said how you were trying to capture your show. Actual physical devices and part numbers. It sounds like you're really capturing your laptop's built-in microphone. The symptoms are a really bad sounding show and also listening to your breathing, the dogs upstairs and the metrobus outside yo...

Re: Playback settings

I think my problem is you keep skipping steps. I'm trying to follow you and I keep falling into the holes. I skinned my knee twice now. You really should be on Audacity 1.3. All the advice we're going to give you is for that version. Audacity 1.2 is really not supported any more. You were able to ma...
