Re: Multitrack playback bug
If Audacity is, as you say, merely a multitrack recorder We probably shouldn't go too far down that pathway. Audacity is an Editorial Environment Production Manager. It's natural saved outputs are Audacity Projects not sound files. If you want a sound file bad enough, you have to Export one. Direct...

Re: What does a Ring Modulator do?
http://forum.audacityteam.org/download/file.php?id=3886 No. I don't know where that came from. I would expect a buzzy square wave playing Chopin. You do need to be careful you don't get into fantasy land because each of the overtones on both originals generate multiplications, too. The acid test is...

Re: What does a Ring Modulator do?
Or the classic illustration, Peter Frampton's singing guitar.

Any two audio signals.
That's not straight "modulation," like the expression pedal on an organ. In that case, one of the two "events," the organ, never goes away.

Re: generating tones
The dB in Audacity refers to the audio level where "0" is the maximum -- the place where the system cannot get any louder -- it runs out of numbers. The measuring system goes down from there to the "quiet" limit of system used -- it runs out of numbers the other way. For 16-bit s...

Re: What does a Ring Modulator do?
I don't know if I can explain one of those without pen and napkin, or waving my hands. The Ring Modulator was so named because of the ring of (usually) highly matched diodes on a schematic drawing. You don't even have to know how to read a schematic to find it. "What's that little ring of parts...

Re: DACs and preamps
I wonder why they don't call normalization, volume eq. Makes more sense to me. Equalization is its own tool, so that's one strike. Normalize and Amplify are not "Special Effects" even though they're listed under Effects. They're simple volume changes like what you can do with the slider o...

Re: Low recording volume
You don't have to go into record to test this. If you launch Audacity and click once inside the red record meters, they will wake up and meter the incoming music.

Re: Low recording volume
Internet Captures, unless extra measures are taken, have the volume of the sender. Try to record something Very, Very Different. You didn't say what your show was, but compare that with, say a YouTube of an Opera or BlueGrass or something. Do Not use your normal internet service.

Re: I CAN'T FIND SILENCE FINDER
Reinstalling Audacity doesn't reinstall Audacity (don't ask). To get a full reset you have to manage the preferences and config files.
http://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/Audacity_Preferences
It does sound like you have a damaged install.

Re: Audacity re-recording backing track
Which Mac and how is the equipment connected? You missed a really important piece of this.
My MacBook Pro has provision for all three services at the same time: USB, Stereo In, and Stereo Out. Some Macs don't.
