Sometimes you can get that if you accidentally include two labels right on top of each other. They're rough to see if you do that, and the designation process can get scrambled. Temporarily delete the bad label and see if there isn't another one behind it.

You posted in a portion of the forum where we can't tell either the computer you have or the version of Audacity, but, in general, you go into Audacity Preferences and select "Play tracks while recording new ones."

Restart Audacity when you make changes like that.

Did you actually install Audacity 1.3.13, or are you running it from the DMG file? How are you getting back and forth between the versions?
