Re: Compression - reduce peaks / smoother
You can do very well with Chris's Compressor -- far better than you can trying to manually set Effect > Compressor or the peak limiter whose name I forget. Chris's Compressor http://theaudacitytopodcast.com/chriss-dynamic-compressor-plugin-for-audacity/ Chris is a full-on, look-ahead volume processo...

Re: Running Two Versions of Audacity?
You can install both versions of Audacity, just don't use both at once. If your system is stable, I'd just leave 1.2 alone. Your sense of neatness could take a back seat to file damage if anything goes wrong. Yes, Audacity 1.3 will open Projects (not AUP files) made by 1.2 and will convert them to 1...

Re: Problems Importing Audio
Since I've never heard of an Audacity quite that confused, I doubt it can be cured by adjustments. Uninstall Audacity and get a fresh install from the web site (below). Make sure you reset the preferences according to the bottom of this posting: http://manual.audacityteam.org/man/Preferences Damaged...

Re: combining audio files
Also try Audacity 1.3. Audacity 1.2 is very old and no longer supported, patched, corrected, or updated. Audacity 1.2 can be unstable on newer computers. Download and install the latest Audacity 1.3 from here... http://audacityteam.org/download/ You can install both audacity 1.2 and Audacity 1.3 on ...

Re: combining audio files
Does the second one come out too fast when you open it by itself? If you have a compressed file, it could play fast no matter how you open it.
Try Importing them.

Disconnect the network temporarily and turn the virus protection off?

Re: The record button does not record..
Do you have a real clean install, or a clean install with all your favorite filters and plugins? Bad VST plugins have been know to cause serous damage.

Re: The record button does not record..
That editing the config file thing is critical in Windows because it resets the early Audacity preferences which were held in the Dreaded Windows Registry. Macs and later Windows don't have to worry about that, but the process works for everybody. Are you trying to record from a device that actually...

Re: Audacity icon remains in Dock
I got a note from one of the soon-to-be Mac Geniuses on 6West. That's an icon for a damaged Sim Link. It should vanish if you click and move it slightly up to the desktop instead of trying to move it to a specific place. If it still doesn't vanish you may need to repair permissions. Go > Utilities >...
