The other thing that can do this is an editing setting that forces Audacity to always edit at the zero crossing points. That can, under certain circumstances, produce audio to the left of zero -- "before it happened."
I'm searching and can't find that setting....

Re: Having problems removing vocals
There's lots of reasons for Vocal Removal to fail. If the original music is mono instead of stereo, they will all fail.

Re: I cannot download Lame.
Audacity doesn't save sound files. To get an MP3 file, you have to Export one and that's the tool that needs lame. If you downloaded lame and installed it already, it may just be there.
File > Export > MP3.

File > Export > MP3.

Analyze > Regular Interval Labels > 300 sec.
All that does is launch a label track with the appropriate labels in it. Do you get that? It's on the bottom beneath the music tracks. If you don't get the label track, the Export tools don't do a thing.

Which QuickTime have you got? Snow Leopard installs the all-but useless QuickTime 10. QT10 is Apple's idea to simplify QuickTime and make it a Simple Player. Everybody hated it. I installed the fully featured QuickTime 7 as a Utility and use that for everything. Do you have Finder set to show you al...

You'll need to fill in a few more holes. We can't be there to see what you're doing. "I connected my something-something vinyl player to my MacBook Pro with the USB cable. I changed Audacity 1.3.13 drop-down menus to recognize the player..... That's the kind of detail we need. I would stop usin...

Re: 1.3.13 causing recurring reboots
It literally comes up through the Windows login screens like you just turned it on? Is this a homemade machine? Are you trying to run Audacity over a network? We should probably wait for the heavy Windows elves for this one, but I would be running the Windows Memory Test. Causing the operating syste...

Re: how do u increase playback speed?
In Audacity 1.3, the Change tools may work a little better. I think Change Tempo may do it. One of them tries to change the presentation speed without affecting the pitch.

Re: Muffling sounds after removing the vocals on an audio
If you have a highly compressed MP3 song, that may be as good as it gets. MP3 compression has damage of its own and can cause problems with Vocal Removal.
