That illustration shows earbuds for monitoring. I used them because they were pretty and available. Yes, the microphone has its own headphone connections provided for latency-free, perfect monitoring, but how you get there isn't simple. I think that's a reference to the newer Macs which are radio terminals and have only one connection for everything, correct me, including charging.
