MP3 is a video sound format. It's full family name is MPEG1, Layer 3, a video format. It will genetically always try to land on specific video frame boundaries, frequently making music longer than you think it should be.

Is the real question you can't open the music in Audacity? If you bought the music, you may not be able to open it in Audacity because of copyright issues. Windows Media has a copy protection format as does iTunes.

This happens when you set your computer to record Internet Audio or what's playing on your computer. Set the Windows Control Panels to record from Line-In, Mic-In or wherever your performance is coming from, not Stereo-Mix or Mix-Out.
