Re: Audacity appears to be increasing the bit rate?
Audacity is not a good INFO tool. Every time we bring it up, we're told that it doesn't make any difference because the specifications are changed once the music is inside Audacity anyway. Because of that, it's possible to edit an MP3 file by taking pieces out and export a larger file than you start...

Re: how to pan the channels to the two extremes?
Given that they are in fact the same length, import them both into Audacity. That will give you two shows one above the other. Select one (in Audacity 1.3) and Tracks > Stereo Track To Mono. Then do the other one. You select a track by clicking the technical specifications box to the left. Using the...

Re: partial overlay help
You don't have to cut and paste, either, you can use the envelope tool (white arrows and bent blue line) to fade each track in and out or present lower or higher volume during dialog -- two or three tracks in the show at once.

Re: partial overlay help
Skipping ahead for a minute, do you have any way of getting the new audio track and the video back together? Or is that not the goal? Each time you import a new audio track, it will appear on its own timeline, one above the other. They will all play at once if you let them. Set with the Mute and Sol...

Re: free plug ins
It's not a waste of time and Audacity can use a number of plugins and tools. http://manual.audacityteam.org/man/Customization However you can create serious problems by adding a badly written or damaged plugin. Try to avoid the common trick of dumping a bushel basket of free plugins into Audacity on...

Re: Please help ME record with my new PC
Stereo Mix is the setting used for recording internet shows or music, not personal recording.
Pink Mic-In doesn't work, either.
Scan down through this (it's an early draft):

Re: Recording Vocal over Instrumental
You can get composite recordings like that if you have Windows set to record what's playing on the computer instead of a standard input device like Line-In or Mike-In. That's the setting needed to record internet music and shows, but is wrong for personal recording. Windows Control panels > Sound an...

Re: iMac and S/PDIF Optical input?
It does. I think they all do. You have to dig around in the more exotic specifications to get it to tell you. You can do very well with the analog Line-In of the Mac and nothing more than one of these. http://kozco.com/tech/audacity/pix/RCAMiniStereo.jpg Unlike many Windows PCs or conventional sound...

I bet you didn't try starting Audacity after you plugged the turntable in.
