The warning should say "You are not saving a sound file." But it doesn't.

To get a sound file in Audacity requires that you Export one.

File > Export > WAV (Microsoft) 16-bit PCM.

That should drop into any music program including Windows Media and iTunes.

It's not straightforward. If the waves are small and the panel is big, then clicking on the numbers to the left is the only way. There's no extra blank real estate. I'm trying to follow this. I saved the project, made a copy of the project, and opened the copy in order to edit it. You can't make a simple file copy of an Audacity Project. You have to be in Audacity and Save the Project As two different names. File > Save Project As... > TuesdayMusic File > Save ...

You can carefully set Labels (Control-B or Command-B) at the exact two points. Then zoom out and select between the two labels. The labels become sticky or magnetic and make it easy to select them.
