While I'm not a UNIX weenie, I can tell you that using Audacity 1.2 can be cause for problems. Download and install Audacity 1.3 from here and see if that doesn't solve your problems.

What is the input device? USB microphone? Sometimes you can force it to work by changing Audacity Preferences to 44100, 16-bit (not 32), Stereo. OK and restart Audacity. See if that helps. Are you listening on speakers with Playthrough running? That can do it, too. Try using headphones or earbuds.

If the last thing you did was record "Internet Audio," then that's the setting you have to reset. That setting is also known as "Recording Sound Playing on Your Computer. That gives you uncontrolled layering of your recordings. Go into Windows Control Panels and make sure you're recor...
