Windows? Mac? Which Audacity? How old is the computer? How much memory and which operating system?

It's not unusual to get some delay, but not one second. There's something wrong.

Audacity is a terrible INFO generator. Try opening the work in Windows > Properties > Advanced and see what that says. Or free QuickTime for Windows and Control-I to get the INFO panel.

Oh, sure. But Audacity is almost incidental to the process. Setting up the computer is the work.
