Re: best technique for recording books
Books have been written about microphone technique, room acoustics, etc, so I'll stick with file basics. Depending on the length of the work, I would probably speak and Export each chapter as a WAV file and make a protection copy of it onto separate media. DO NOT use MP3 for production, effects, fil...

Re: Distortion recording analog tape to computer
You have pretty much all of these problems. You should consider an external sound card like the UCA-202.

Re: Editting A Project Over A Network.
Audacity doesn't "know" about network delays, packet collisions, and resends, so, no. I know it's popular to think about networks as a "wire between here and there," but that's not the case at all. Software has to be designed to cope with network architecture.

Re: Fast Forward with Sound?
The Official Party Line is Audacity does not do scrubbing, either fast or slow. We were comfortable with that until people posted that a very early Audacity, in fact used to do just that. http://forum.audacityteam.org/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=61281 We've been trying to recreate that effect ever sinc...

Re: 32 Bit to 16 Bit Not Saving?????
Audacity will not Save music files. To get a music file you have to Export one. File > Export See if they will accept WAV files which is the Audacity Export default. If they require MP3, then you have to install the "lame" software package. Audacity will not Export MP3 by itself. http://au...

Re: Progressive amplification
You can drag-select and apply Effect > Fade In or Effect > Fade Out. You can also use the Envelope tool (two white arrows and bent blue line) to create a custom fade and there you can define both ends. http://kozco.com/tech/audacity/pix/CrossFade.jpg Those blue lines are rubber bands and you can pus...

Re: saving project
Once inside Audacity, File > Export > WAV (Microsoft) 16-bit PCM. Follow good finame conventions. Upper and lower case letters, numbers, dash and underscore. If you insist on dates, use the ISO version 20120123. That music file should drop right into any Music CD authoring program such as Windows Me...

Re: Crash after connecting USB mic
Yes, had I looked at the dump it would have said so. It is intended that you install Audacity inside its own folder. /Applications/Audacity/Audacity.app (and support files and folders) See pic. You can install it split like you have it, but that runs the risk that Audacity cannot find its support fi...

Re: Crash after connecting USB mic
Which Audacity 1.3 do you have? Rescan is a great improvement over the old way which was to restart Audacity, but it should not crash. Koz
