it's usually best to normalize to 0dB before applying the compressor. And that's the step that Chris doesn't need. There is no requirement that the show get within range first. One of the steps in Overdubbing is to adjust recording latency so that doesn't happen. You don't have to do that. That may not work so good if you're on cloud drives, but if you're on a local machine, that's always worked for me.
