We are using clipping as a test device. Under no circumstances should you be clipping or in any way overloading the sound channel. That damage sounds terrible and it's permanent. Never make the red recording meters go all the way to the right or the blue waves all the way up and down.

If you have one. Most Windows Laptops do not have a Stereo Line-In and that's the leading cause of distortion like you have. See web publication.You need a cable between the line-out plug of the cassette deck, and the line-in plug of the computer sound card.

I don't know that I follow that exactly, but you can get noises like that if you go through a USB hub anywhere. Audio hates doing that. Do you use external USB hard drives in the system? Audio doesn't think too highly of that, either.

The best you can do is install the FFMpeg software. That allows Audacity to recognize and process a very wide range of content, however, if VLC couldn't deal with it, that's not a good sign.
