As far as I know, the only way to tell Audacity about directories is...
Audacity > Preferences > Directories > Temp Files
I don't know of any setting for Home or Save directory.

Re: help had a crash while recording
save the project as .aup file You saved the show as an Audacity Project the manager for which is the AUP file. You also need the _DATA folder which actually contains the work -- although not as formal sound files. The aup file is a text file and you can open it up in a text editor and read it. Like...

Re: Can I easily transcribe a podcast using Audacity?
Say that again but use different words. Transcribing is the act of playing a voice and changing it into printed words (one version). What do you want to change your show into? Koz

Re: Mis has static while overdubbing, but none when recordin
That's exactly what happens when you go through a USB hub on the way to the computer. Multiple pathways and sound management do not work well through a hub -- or anything else that can affect connection speed.

Re: Montage/collage in several tracks
Two hours is starting to get a little concerning for computer space and speed. Show data gets seriously large around there, what with UNDO, and Effects and Filter layers. Anyway. I don't know of any way to do random. Computers hate that and they're very difficult to make work right when you don't ha...

Re: Just got Audacity - Basic questions!
Laptops tend to have built-in microphones, deskside machines tend not to.
You can open Audacity and mess with the Device Toolbar. If it doesn't say "Built-In Microphone." then you probably need to buy something.

Re: noise removal
If you're concerned with losing the performance, you should Save the Project and then, if it's a multi-track show, you can Export a Multi-Track WAV file. File > Export > Other Uncompressed Formats > WAV Microsoft. Then Save or Export the work as you go as different filenames so you don't step on the...

Re: audacity causes Mic/pre amp crackling on startup?
tried with multiple reinstallations of audacity 2.0. No, probably not. You "reinstall" Audacity by management of the preferences file, not by blowing the program away. Scroll down a bit. "Resetting Preferences." http://manual.audacityteam.org/help/manual/man/preferences.html Koz

Re: No wave form from imported mp3
If the files turn out to be Something Magic, you may decide to download and install the FFMpeg package. FFMpeg allows Audacity to manage many more different files than it can by itself.

Re: No wave form from imported mp3
Since Audacity opens MP3s just fine, we might suggest that the files are not MP3. You can open the problem files and look. Right Click > Properties > Advanced or Extra. You can also force Windows to show you filename extensions. That can go a long way to solving technical problems. -- Hidden File Ex...
