They're all peak or peak-to-peak. We haven't measured RMS since the last ANSI C16.5 VU meter went out of service, and even that didn't conform to RMS exactly because it had a ballistic constant.

Re: track's vertical scales (decibels)
Many charts tell us 0 dB is the threshold of hearing and 130 dB is the threshold of pain That would be dBSPL. Sound Pressure Level. And this one has variations: flat, tailored to your ear, etc. zero dB is the max for recording without clipping in Audacity... That one is dBFS. Full Scale, and it's n...

Re: Recording stops, happens with cracks and hiccups,
Is the USB preamp going through a hub with other things? That's a classic problem with USB sound and is related to equipment being too busy for live sound.

Re: Recording stops, happens with cracks and hiccups,
This error almost always happens when the computer is too busy to manage real-time sound. We wrote a couple of things about this. http://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/Troubleshooting_Recordings#Skips There are two information branches and they're both valuable. If you've never done real time audio or v...

Re: Feature Suggestion: Accent Training with Audacity
The original purpose of this technique is one person in the basement (optional) recording a symphony by playing each instrument one after the other and overlaying them.

Re: Feature Suggestion: Accent Training with Audacity
Can you make any use of Multitrack Overdubbing? After you get your system set up, you speak at the exact same time as the trainer playback and your voice goes down on a separate rack. From then, you can fade back and forth between the two and listen, syllable by syllable to the differences. That's s...

Re: Why am I getting a delay from the line in from my guitar
The problem with most sound services on multi-track is that you can't listen to yourself in real time. Even with a nice internal soundcard, your sound has to go into the computer and come back out again, putting it one computer late -- and that's the delay you can't easily cure. There is one configu...

Re: Waveform post processing
As pointed out, MP3 always creates distortion. The fresh show sound and the MP3 show sound are always different. It's built-in and you can minimize it, but you can never make it completely go away. That's why we tell people never do production in MP3. You can't ever get a good quality show at the en...

Re: No time length on recorded file
I considered trying to dig you out with the old software, but that may be just too much work. In your current Audacity, export as WAV files (or one big wav file) and uninstall the older Audacity. Install the latest 2.0.1 from here.

Re: Making volumes equal
Audacity automatically selects the whole song if you do nothing. That's the default. That was a change from the old Audacity which would demand you select something at all times. It generated a terrific number of posts.
