Re: Reducing Harshness of Booming Vocals
It's good but I can hear a problem with plosive Ps and Bs ... How? How are you listening? Headphones? I admit I didn't do the Worst Case Listening Experience with Computer Speakers, but I guess that's warranted. The sibilant highs are where modern listening systems live. http://www.kozco.com/mytv/c...

Re: Reducing Harshness of Booming Vocals
But yes, pop shield is always good. http://kozco.com/tech/audacity/wynonna2.jpg I bought an AKG microphone and it came with a pop shield in the case. I was surprised to find that the thing had two layers of women's black stockings stretched over the hoop instead of only one. My other stand-alone shi...

Re: Reducing Harshness of Booming Vocals
Maybe de-essing, but the pop shield won't do any good for the "s" sounds since they're not plosives. As long as they don't get gritty, I think that's just what the performer sounds like. Noise Removal is required before compression (in this case) because the whole object of compression is ...

Re: Multiple Host Podcast HELP!!
We never found a good, hard-wired way to do call-in. All the non-multiple thousand dollar methods have significant shortcomings. So that one is not easy, either. Another good reason to just walk into the studio, sit down and let the engineer do it. Koz

Re: Reducing Harshness of Booming Vocals
None of them should change the edge. That grit came from the distortion and damage of the original work. Your voice appears to have a slight natural sibilance. If you're intent on changing that, then we need more processing. I personally would leave it just as it is. You are a product. The object is...

Re: Reducing Harshness of Booming Vocals
You can change the Compression ratio from 5:1 to a lesser number and get less dense and intense, more natural sound. Of course, with no compression, and the other tools just helping a little bit, that should give you the most natural sound of all, but may not be able to compete in volume with other ...

Re: Distortion with M-Audio Delta 1010LT audio card?
That's not a plain sound card is it? It's multi-channel in and out. So that's the first red flag. What does the Audacity Device Toolbar say under the speaker icon -- where does it think it's playing the show? You can look in Audacity Preferences > Devices as well. Audacity doesn't support ASIO multi...

Re: Reducing Harshness of Booming Vocals
That better? http://www.kozco.com/tech/clips/harshness-test-amplify-NR-Compress.wav I followed my procedure with the Compressor tool. I did not Normalize. You need to pay attention to the order of operation because the tools can interact with each other. From the original work. Effect > Amplify > Ne...

Re: Multiple Host Podcast HELP!!
Here it is. http://www.kozco.com/tech/audacity/pix/3013PressureZone.jpg That's without the black paint job. That's slap it together and see how it works. Quite well actually. That's a Radio Shack 3013 tie-tack microphone for which you need an adapter for your sound mixer. It has batteries, so it doe...

Re: Multiple Host Podcast HELP!!
A while back the Car Talk shows stopped telling us they were produced at WBUR in Boston. We assume the producers were trying to do the show themselves at home and save a lot of money. About a month later, they were back at WBUR. It's rough to produce good content and the actual physical show at the ...
