Both lame and ffmpeg are stand-alone programs as well as modules/plugins. I don't think you need Audacity at all.

Re: Audacity Not Recording Well
It's not only memory. Everything is demanding real time access to the hard drive. It can't actually do that, so something loses. Skipping stuttering during capture is fairly common when the speed of the machine isn't up to all the tasks.

Re: Novice Question
No, with the caution that you connect the computer, then the microphone, not the other way 'round. Mic-In on a sound card supplies 5 volts on one of the internal connections as you slide the 1/8" home. It vanishes once the connection is pushed all the way in and it's only there a split second, ...

Re: Inconsistant Noise Removal
Since both noise reduction and file management are wildly and broadly misunderstood, we need to get down much finer than "my file sometimes doesn't work." What precisely is the work; what are you removing and from what? We warn people not to do production in MP3 or any other compressed del...

Re: Newer codec versions
Audacity is married to the two software packages at the download site. Even better, the last time I tried to manually install lame and FFMpeg, it failed. You must use the automatic install and let it put the two packages in the directory of its choosing. If you have Mountain Lion, you may have troub...

We have been known to recommend a Behringer UCA-202 for USB stereo in and out.

Re: Can I record with web cam device?
Our Logitech webcams show up on the Sound Device listings of our computers as an available microphone. You may need to find it in Windows Control Panels and select it there before you launch Audacity. Also, sometimes you need to reset Audacity sound preferences to 44100, 16-bit, Stereo. After you do...

Re: How do I do a partial fade?
Audacity has the Envelope Tool, two white arrows and bent blue line.
That will give you steering rubber bands top and bottom of a track. Push the rubber bands around to change any volume to any value any time.
Crossfade example.

Re: stop recording after record is finished and removing gap
Audacity > Transport > Timer Record. The early versions of this made messy assumptions about what you wanted, so pay attention to the time entry windows and make sure they say exactly what you want. While Audacity does have Analyze > Silence Finder and Analyze > Sound Finder, they're sometimes more ...
