Re: How do you turn off saving an old copy of a file?
We who do this for a living are horrified you would even consider stepping on the original file with changes. I know it's common, but it's still dangerous. "Audacity crashed when I was saving my show and now it won't open any more. It's the only recording of my grandmother and it's really impor...

Re: Why loud background noise when I play back recording?
Disconnect all your external sound equipment and USB devices. Can you make a good, simple recording from your built-in microphone? The way Macs switch things around can be different from the Way Windows handles it. On the Device toolbar drop-down, see if there is a listing for "Built-In Microph...

Re: Noise on input meter
Noise that appears on a laptop with nothing else plugged in may be coming from the built-in microphone given that nothing is broken. When you plug in your USB mixer, Windows should recognize it and switch to it as a source of music. It might also switch the speakers to it, rather than the build-in s...

Re: Exporting WAV problem
When you export, use the drop-downs from the export window to force an export to your Desktop. Sometimes Audacity defaults to the system directory where Audacity lives and that's very bad.

Re: Exporting WAV problem
You used to be able to create damage by putting punctuation marks in the meta-data, but I though they engineered that out of the latest Audacity.

Re: Exporting WAV problem
You put some punctuation in the wrong place. According to that exact sentence, Mac-OS is trying to make a hard drive called "Audacity 2.0.2." I bet that doesn't exist. Most of us have drives called "Mac OS Hard Drive" or "Jimmy HD" or something like that. Export your mu...

Re: fixed volume setting
The question is why your recording volume doesn't stick. I record a radio show each week and use my computer for a million other jobs between shows. Each Saturday I sit down and my Audacity recording volume is exactly where I left it, the high end of 0.6. Do you use Skype or other conferencing softw...

Re: Version 2.0.2 vs Version 1.2.6
Taking it backwards. Export will be gray if you have nothing o export. You need to have something on the timeline. There is an additional problem that MP3 is not included in Audacity, you have to install it as a separate software package. MP3 creation is normally paid, licensed software. http://manu...

Re: Can't hear anything using Audacity 2.0.2 w/ Apogee MiC/S
You have your headphones connected to the headphone connection of your Mac, right? Close Audacity. Apple > System Preferences > Hardware > Sound > Output. Make sure Headphones or Built-In Output is selected. When you're done, you should be able to hear the Mac volume control Poit Poit Poit sound whe...

Re: Need some help with multiple tracks..
The effect is you pressing Stop instead of Pause. Is that what you did? Pause and then resume recording by pressing Pause again. It toggles. The distortion is probably you setting up the computer for overdubbing where it plays the old tracks while it's recording new ones. If your computer isn't powe...
