It should be a matter of pulling down the audio input selector (microphone symbol) and picking the same thing you used to pick before -- typically Stereo-Mix, or WAV-Out. Something like that. Older versions of Audacity would occasionally configure this tool wrong and it wouldn't work, but the later ...

Audacity Projects are upward compatible. Once you open and edit a Project in a new Audacity, you can't save it in an older format. I think you may have some conditions confused. You're talking about crackling noises during high volume, right? Every time you talk or sing, the words are crunchy? That's overload/clipping.
