Re: Sound Design

But not necessarily. You can control for that. Distortion sounds loud. Koz

Re: Purchasing a Microphone

There are some interesting trade-offs with microphones. You can do really well with an inexpensive USB microphone, but those are aggressively non-expandable. You can't plug them into a mixing board later and do a four microphone recording.

Re: Purchasing a Microphone

People usually start out like that and we talk them out of it. The best thing you can do is make a good recording room. Echoes, reverberation, cars starting and dogs barking kill more shows than a bad microphone. This is a thing I did with furniture moving pads for a voice shoot. The microphone is n...

Re: Can't save or export audacity files

The system can not find ...
Can you find it? If you drill down to that same directory manually in Windows can you get there? You can get problems like that if you try to save a project or export a file with punctuation marks in the filename.

Yes, Audacity 1.2.6 is seriously out of date.

This will give you real time measurements of Sound Pressure Level. http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=12680845 You get to decide whether to use the "A" curve (sounds the same) or the "C" curve actually is the same. A takes into account human hearing. You'll hav...

Those are all frequently asked questions. They are also guaranteed ways to kill your show. You quality for 1 and 4. -- The Four Horsemen of Audio Recording (reliable, time-tested ways to kill your show) -- 1. Echoes and room reverberation (Don't record the show in your mom's kitchen.) -- 2. Overload...

Re: getting signal from USB Mixer

Do you use Skype or other internet phone service? They take over the sound system when they run and sometimes they don't give all of it back. Past the easy solutions, you need to give us painful step-by-step what you do with emphasis on the exact point you realize it's not going to work. You probabl...

Re: getting signal from USB Mixer

This is something that started the last time I tried to overdub.
Good to know. The overwhelmingly popular thing that kills people all the time is ignoring the USB device. Plug up all your USB equipment -- all of it and then start Audacity.

Or plug all of it up and restart Audacity.

Re: Sound quality obtained using built-in laptop mic.

It sounds like you're reading off-mic in an echoey room. You can probably go a long way toward a good performance by curing the echo. There are people at work who hang blankets and quilts in a closet and record in there. I did a passable recording studio with furniture moving blankets. http://www.ko...
