Re: Noise Removal
Option C: Stop recording the fan. I'm not kidding. The grownups go to great effort not to record anything they don't want. You are experiencing one of the problems of having a microphone cable that won't go over six feet (2M). Can you slide a chair and a quilt between you and the computer? Fan noise...

Re: tricky feedback removal
Fortunately, feedback like that tends to happen in a regenerative, slightly resonant system. In English, it happens at a single pitch tone which makes it a stationary, easy target for the Audacity tools. If you have a very high quality PA system, sometimes those will howl at more than one pitch or t...

Re: au files format specification
Audacity always does everything internally at 32-bit floating. Audacity defaults to Export Dither (noise) to help mask bit translation errors that might otherwise "add up" in an output show and produce audible distortion. There is a technique whereby you import a "perfect" WAV (f...

He sounds like he's recording in his mum's kitchen, too. http://kozco.com/tech/audacity/clips/EchoSample.mp3 Did you play that clip I posted? That's your raw sound for the first second, then the corrections I made, then the bad sound again. If the sound in the middle was OK for you, then I know how ...

Where did you get this file from and how big is it? Is it likely to expand to over 13 hours of show? Koz

Re: Finding Number of Syllables per minutes (Speech Rate)
The short answer is no. This is a job for a software package that can understand what's being said. Audacity is far too simple for that. A designer elf may be able to program something that can count volume changes, but it still would not be able to correct its own mistakes and would be a slave to n...

Re: Matching audio levels
You can't look at the waveforms and tell instantly how loud things are going to be. Worse, if everything is pretty loud to begin with, any adjustment may create damage and distortion. However, Chris's Compressor was designed to do exactly what you want. He designed it so he didn't have to constantly...

Re: Capturing from Online Source
That sounds like you managed to form a feedback loop in your sound system.

I would do a brief synopsis of the process, but recording Stereo-Mix doesn't lend itself to brevity.

Re: Line In Too Loud
Yes. You're not using your computer's Line-In because if you're on a Windows laptop, you probably don't have one. This machine has super sensitive Microphone In and Headphone Out and it's pretty normal. http://www.kozco.com/tech/audacity/pix/PCLaptopSound.jpg If that's not what you're doing, then po...

Which leads to production decisions in both audio and video: "We should not use that particular content because it won't compress well."
