OK, you skipped a few steps in there.

The download seemed to work OK. You opened up Downloads and the disk image file (.dmg) was there. You dragged it onto your desktop and tried to double-click open it? What happens if you Control-Click it > Get INFO?

If you click on the Audacity recording pull-down, what does it say you're recording from? I'm betting it's the built-in microphone which is why it vanishes if the speakers go away.
