The sound damage is caused by you plugging a hot, powerful mixer signal into a tiny, vulnerable, delicate Mic-In. The UCA202 (or equivalent) is expecting a hot, powerful mixer signal, so all is well. Control-L silences an existing track -- no breaks. Generate Silence produces a break in the show.

Edit > Undo

Did that cover it? Yes 32 is the minimum to make a mono show barely passable. Lower than that it sounds funny to just about everybody.
