How are you playing the tape and how is it connected to the computer? Model Numbers? Does the player have sound meters? Does it have a headphone socket?

A note. Windows has built-in "Enhanced Services" that try to cancel room noise. It's designed for voice conferencing but it will kill a musical performance.

I deleted audacity from my computer and re-installed it During the Windows install, there should have been a check box to reset Audacity Preferences. If you don't check that box, the new Audacity will install and open exactly where the old one left off. Normally, that's a good thing because it lets...

'Bad drivers" almost always follow a major OS upgrade. Once everything settles problems usually go away. Outdated drivers are a constant problem. The device, the drivers and the OS have to match -- and all depend on a stable system with no competition between programs. I'm looking at you Skype....

It's not that unusual for programs or systems to enforce their own automatic volume controls, either.L4D2 the audio sounds completely unchanged.
Delicate adjustments to a radio broadcast show are a complete waste of time because the broadcast transmitter sets volume, as an example.
