Re: Find out what effects have been applied

How would I find out *exactly* what they are?
Contact the production agency or the artist. There's no way to work it back from the finished song.

Re: Integrated Dynamic Range (DR) measurment tool

Fragments and some history. In the early days of the broadcast loudness war, there were enough complaints that Some Means was determined to be necessary to "Even Out" the loudness variations in a broadcast hour. The broadcasters and networks were understandably horrified at the prospect of...

Re: microphone

Which microphone? Make sure the microphone is plugged all the way in and if it has any lights, they came on. Restart Audacity. Audacity looks for new microphones when it starts. If the microphone didn't arrive after that, then there is no microphone. Go into the Windows Control Panels and see if you...

Re: Manipulating Decibels

I'll save your advice and do my best to do it justice! It would be good if you read through a page or two of text, run it through Chris — alone — and submit that as a test posting just to see what they say. Reading the whole "Hitchhiker's Guide" only to have it fall flat three weeks later...

Re: Manipulating Decibels

There was a thread a while ago on how to tell people to meet the audiobook specification without becoming a recording engineer. Part of the problem is getting something to tell you what the RMS value of your voice is. No regular Audacity tool will do that. [Graphic of clock running backwards] I'm re...

Re: Beginner Question About Input Volume

That would be the difference between Open and Light and Natural (and lower volume) and Dense, Forward, Intense and very loud. This is one of the production decisions you make when you record and present your performance. And yes, that's one of the shortcomings of a USB microphone. A whole recording ...

Re: Beginner Question About Input Volume

One particularly evil newbie error is using MP3 for everything. Never do production in MP3. MP3 causes sound distortion and you can't stop it. The distortion can get worse and worse as you edit your song. Use Audacity Projects and WAV format sound files. If you need to post on-line or to your Person...

Re: Beginner Question About Input Volume

Isn't live recording fun? People look at the music that recording artists produce and their own live recording and say: "What's wrong with this picture?" Rock Star performer voices and music go through intense processing and "polishing" before you ever hear the show. Nobody short...

Re: Normalizing audio levels

There is a promotional announcement on PBS which does that. She sounds like she's speaking from behind me. It's super annoying.
Maybe if I write them a big check, they'll stop doing that. See? It worked!!
