Re: Recording differences Audacity vs ??
very-hard (or impossible) to hear the difference between a high-quality MP3 and the uncompressed original (in a proper blind ABX test). Perfectly true, but people insist on editing them and there you can get into serious trouble. I need to drop by the office supply store tomorrow. I'm running low o...

Re: Making a file "low-fi"
My USB mic is apparently just "too good" Make? Model Number? If you have to go through all that just to make a recording that sounded like your older analog recordings, there is something seriously wrong with your system. Crashing sibilants in particular are always a warning sign of a mis...

Re: Quality of piano sound on a keyboard
It sounds like a poor sample. Yamaha sampled a spinet instead of a larger piano. It sounds exactly like the small piano tucked against the wall that a friend of mine used to have. My Yamaha has a bunch of different pianos and the default (Piano #1) is not my favorite at all. There are piano's way up...

Re: Audio disappearing as Audacity records
What are you recording? If it's occasionally music, then you may be running afoul of Windows Enhanced Services. This is the system that tries to sense when you have noise or interference in your show and filter it out — in real time. Similar to what a cellphone does in a noisy environment. If your ...

Re: Manipulating Decibels
Sooooo close. You can almost do this with 60dB meters and a little guesswork, but for an unfortunate graphic design. If your noise peaks about where that unlabeled line is (-57), then you pass.

Re: Manipulating Decibels
Well. That's awkward. Attached is what you have to do to see your noise floor. At one time I knew how to split Record and Play.

Re: Skipping in Mavericks
That's actually the bad news. We're looking for something to point to that causes the problem. In electronics servicing work, a "Tough Dog" is a piece of equipment that fails for no reason. You have a computer Tough Dog. Still, disconnecting the network is highly suggestive. I have a tiny ...

Re: Manipulating Decibels
@Xina You commented that you were designing the cover art for your publication. It sounds to me like you will get all the way up to finished product submission before ACX tells you whether or not your sound is OK and they will accept your work. So that's the phone call to ACX Support. Is there a way...

Re: Manipulating Decibels
What they definitely don't want is: "talk, talk, talk | (absolute silence) | talk, talk, talk.." because that is completely unnatural and is more distracting for the listener than having a small amount of noise ("room tone"). I don't remember seeing that in the ACX Requirements ...

Re: Skipping in Mavericks
There is a Mac malware product that was going around a bit ago. You might perform those three terminal search tasks and see if you have any of them. http://www.cnet.com/how-to/how-to-remove-the-flashback-malware-from-os-x/ If you said you had your symptoms on a Windows machine, people would ask you ...
