Wouldn't it be a logical assumption that anyone struggling to keep the mounted drive around may be trying to run Audacity from it instead of installing Audacity for real?

You mean ejecting the mounted drive. The .dmg was never mounted. It's just a fancy file.

Nope. Exactly the same thing in 10.9.3. So technically, no, you can't trash it, but you can totally Eject it which makes it vanish since it wasn't real to begin with.
