Re: Help me to understand something
It doesn't work. Maybe it doesn't work on your file. You can use MediaInfo to tell what you really have... http://mediaarea.net/en/MediaInfo/Download ...or you can get an idea by telling Windows to stop hiding the filename extensions. Hidden File Extensions - Windows -- Start > My Computer > Tools ...

Re: Can audacity direct-write to a file?
I'm fuzzy, but I think if you start a Project, save it once and add to it, it does pretty much that. When you're done, File > Save and all Audacity has to do is tie a ribbon on the files already there. I don't think it actually saves anything more if you do that. Hotkey Control-S. If the show is End...

Re: stay on top
All the control keys and hotkeys are shared between programs. The one on top gets them, so you can't have two programs on top. Why did you want this?

Re: Focusrite Scarlet 2i2
I've had Audacity stop working if the Stereo/Mono setting doesn't match.set Audacity to record in mono.
How is that possible?

Re: Behringer q802usb - help with effects
Correct. It has an Effects Send. Plug that into whatever separate echo generator you bought and then bring the output of that generator back into the mixer to mix it with your live voice. Or instead of your live voice. I can't go any further without ripping into the instruction book.

Re: Improving a voice recording with heavy clipping
What's the bumper-sticker explanation of that? Somehow you have to do something to the clipped areas to make them less objectionable. What does this code do? Or is the real problem finding them all? I know clipping distortion always goes up in pitch and low pass equalization can help by simple round...

As above, you're fine if you never compress again. It's the second one that kills you.

Re: Why would there be a delay of sound thru-put on input?
When I wrote the first overdubbing tutorial, I purposely included three hardware devices that don't have this problem. Most soundcards do.

You are the poster boy for Chris's Compressor. http://theaudacitytopodcast.com/chriss-dynamic-compressor-plugin-for-audacity/ Chris wrote this compressor so he could listen to widely fluctuating opera in the car. I've never had this problem, but some report a volume problem in the beginning and end ...
