I forced the Operating System (OS-X) to give me INFO and I forced VLC Media Player to open it and give me info.

Are you sure this is an MP3 file? I assume this MP3 plays OK in Windows Media Player? I'm betting it's not. You can tell Windows to stop hiding file extensions.. A Project will only open as a show if the _data folder and the .aup file are in the same location or folder. Try pulling them both onto your desktop.

Details are good. Audacity is not a vast corporation and the group is trying to support three different operating systems. If you uncover a serious problem it's good for us to know about it. Yosemite caused a number of problems.

Then they may be data disks. An Audio CD doesn't offer its music as standard WAV files. Does your system support 48000 sample frequency in addition to 44100? That's the video standard and it goes a bit higher up. Koz

Plug the Cassette Player in before you start Audacity. You can also restart Audacity to find the player or Transport > Rescan.
