You can also get crossed up if Audacity is looking for a stereo device and the microphone is mono.

Audacity > Edit > Preferences > Devices.

How often do you need to do that? That's a danger sign. If your computer is in trouble, this last failure may be a sign of the problems getting worse.

Which is why I posted the sample AAC file from my iTunes library. If it plays correctly, then there may be something wrong with your libarary files.
