Some newer computers don't have USB A any more. You need to sort which adapters you need.

You may be experiencing one of the main reasons Audacity doesn't make a very good surveillance recorder. No time stamps. There's other reasons, but that's a big one.

Which snaps us back to knowing what your microphone is and how you have it connected.If the interface or associated software is gating it will be possible to switch it off.

You can get that error if you use punctuation marks in filenames. Upper case, lower case, numbers, -dash- and _underscore_ are safe. That's it. Today is 2020-10-20. No slash marks.

A word on decibels. They seem to work backwards but the numbers are all negative, so it's OK.
