Did you install the FFMpeg software? I don't think plain Audacity will know what an m4a file is.

The AUP file is the list of instructions that tell Audacity what to do with all the stuff in the _DATA folder. Stereo Mix on many computers sends the show out to the speaker connection and then turns it around and brings it back in for recording.
