You can totally use an adapter cable to plug an external microphone into that hole. I have the parts of an experiment to see how well I can make that work for field recordings. But it is mono, not stereo and it overloads very easily.

You hit everything but knowing that a microphone can be as much as 1000 times lower volume than other sound sources. I assume you meant the green bars, the green sound meters. The blue parts of the screen are the blue waves or waveforms. If you stopped getting those, it may be because you're making a silent or very low volume recording.

View > Toolbars > Reset Toolbars.

If you're live recording, it's a good idea to pull the sound meters very much bigger than the default. Click on the right edge and pull.
