Re: How To align two different recordings of the same source
Stepping on original sound files is strongly discouraged. Any mistakes in the process get burned into the sound files and it's full stop. You can't go back and do it again. Offering fine tuning for the positioning/matching system is a good thing, but fully automated matching is harder than you think...

Re: Unmodified file gets modified?
Opening and Exporting (Audacity will not Save a sound file) may add dithering signals. So no, they're not the same. This regularly burns scientists hoping for free scientific and research tools. Audacity is an audio production editor not a WAV editor. You can turn off dithering in preferences. Audac...

Re: What is causing this issue?
I have found that in the case of vocal performances and audiobook production under Audacity 2.1.0 and 2.1.1 , the noise reduction of the beast (6, 6, 6) works remarkably well and leaves few if any artifacts. If you need more serious reduction, the next two levels 12, 6, 6 and 18, 6, 6 may be needed,...

Re: USB connection from turntable to a new iMac
Also, have you tried another USB port and/or cable? That's my guess. If the turntable doesn't show in System Preferences, it means the turntable isn't getting to the Mac. You can close Audacity until you get this sorted. You could have a bad cable or a bad connection on the computer. The turntable ...

Re: Time Domain and Frequency Domain
There's a little black arrow to the left of the audio track. That's the touch point for a menu system. One of the menu items is change the timeline from amplitude up and down over a time reference, to frequency up and down over a time reference.

Re: Time Domain and Frequency Domain
Drag-select the portion of the show you want to analyze. Analyze > Plot Spectrum. That's frequency versus amplitude. Somewhere in the show there is a medium size 430Hz tone.
Drop-down menu to the left of the track > Spectrogram. That one is frequency versus time.

Re: Removing audio without moving
Audacity has no provision to export nothing, so deleting may look good on the timeline, the instant you export it, "nothing" will collapse and mess up your timing. So putting dead silence in there is a good alternative.

Re: USB connection from turntable to a new iMac
At the risk of gently shifting the buck, if the Mac can't find it, Audacity will never find it. Are there any lights on the turntable? Is it powered from the USB or does it have its own power cord? Never mind. It has a power cord. Does it have a USB light? It's not unusual for a USB sound device to ...

Re: USB connection from turntable to a new iMac
Step one is to see if the Mac knows it's there.
Apple (upper left desktop) System Preferences > Sound > Input.
If it shows up there, Restart Audacity. Audacity automatically checks for new devices when it starts. You can also force a check with Transport > Rescan.
Still stuck?
