Another note. I got a boost to do this from someone who started recording an audiobook (one of many) by squatting in a hotel room closet full of blankets and presenting into a small recorder. Seemingly well, too.
I don't remember the conditions or who. Behold, the right-brain engineer.

Re: Stand-Alone Recorder
Stand-alone everything. One candy bar jammed into a mic stand. Pictures to follow. I have a clothespin/expanding microphone clip on my mic stand and I clipped the recorder into that—along the bottom so it didn't interfere with the acoustic management at the top. I could not be happier that it doesn'...

Re: Making subliminals with audactity
The worst problem we have with sub-liminal is testing. When we produce an audiobook compliant clip, we have tools that clearly state whether the sound quality is up to snuff or not. So if you can come up with benchmark or quality control testing, we're here for you.

Next version of De-Esser: Drag-select the Essing sound similar to Profile in Noise Reduction > OK. Select the whole show or segment. De-Essing Value: More---------------^--------------Less OK. The computer can figure out the frequency bands, intervals, step sizes, etc. from the Essing Profile. Koz

Re: What to do with non-talking track in interview?
I got rid of a bunch of it with a custom equalizer filter that I can publish (clip attached).
So it's a race as to which tool can do a better job.

Re: What to do with non-talking track in interview?
Thank you for the test clip. We can go a long way toward helping when we know what the original sounds like. I applied Steve's Custom rumble filter and adjusted the volume with Normalize and I got it to pass ACX AudioBook Testing (attached - last sentence). No compression, no noise removal, no proce...

I don't know if it's a published feature, but when I use it, it depresses the noise floor, I suspect according to that setting. It's the kind of surprise I like. I rarely need compression over 2:1 for anybody. The word "gentle" when describing corrections usually means the performer sounds...

Re: make super long birdsong recording
Put it on a Personal Music Player. Those will play as long as the batteries hold out. Some will loop. Plug it into a charger and they'll go for weeks.

Re: Boost different vocal parts (bass, alto, etc.) in MP3
I could always just settle for boosting the treble and the bass. That's what you'll be settling for, yes. There's no convenient way to split up a quartet into individual performers. Although we can do better than treble and bass controls. http://manual.audacityteam.org/o/man/equalization.html Koz
