Did you try it? I think the idea is the files should open cross-platform. If you split the program versions too far you may run into problems.

Audacity > Edit > Preferences > Recording > Latency.

That's what the Audacity Latency setting does. You play the original track into headphones and then immediately into a microphone while overdubbing.
