Make sure the player is plugged in and restart Audacity. Audacity checks for connections when it starts. If you plug something in later, it may not see it. You can also Transport > Rescan.

I think I'm catching on. Do you hear yourself through your own headphones? Turn off Audacity > Edit > Preferences > Recording > [_]Playthrough.

You also have to do this if you're recording musical overdubbing, too. Recording your voice against an existing backing or rhythm track.

Audacity (and most programs) can't split apart a mixed performance into individual voices, instruments and sounds. The Level Speech add-on can try to figure out the voices are and adjust them. I tried uninstalling my current Audacity and installing the latest one (2.4.2) Isn't there a setting now to "Reset" Audacity? Installing Audacity doesn't reset it and it can hang on to bad settings and adjustments by accident. I've never done it. Doesn't it pop up in the 2.4.2 install? Koz

Did you restart Windows? Do a deep shutdown. Shift+Shutdown, wait and then Start. That clears out more things than the other two.
