Re: 50+ minute MP3 played in 12 seconds
If Audacity doesn't understand the compression format of a show (it's probably not actually MP3), it will play the show without compression. So you can get the percent compression by dividing the two numbers. I get 300 to 1 compression which is way too high for a good sounding show or song. That mak...

Re: recording both comp sound and external mic simultaneousl
You should have posted additional information as a reply to this thread, not as a new message. I don't remember how to straighten this out.

Re: recording both comp sound and external mic simultaneousl
I am having some difficulty doing the same on my new Macbook Pro You may have a lot more difficulty. Macs have no native ability to record themselves, so just recording the far side of a Skype call or YouTube sound could be entertaining. Did you give away the Windows machine yet? I would keep that ...

Re: Error: Unable to open Target file for writing
You can get that error if you put punctuation marks in a filename or sometimes the labels. This typically happens with dates. 10/14/15 may look like the current date to you, but to the computer is looks like a filename and two different folders. It's best to use the ISO version of dates 2015-10-14 i...

Re: Increasing volume of older recordings
Maybe I could pick up about 6 dB. Which is barely audible. My world tends to revolve around audiobooks, but you might find the gentle compression settings useful (Audacity 2.1.0, 2.1.1). Audio Compressor -- Select the whole clip or show by clicking just above MUTE. -- Effect > Normalize: [X]Remove ...

Re: Increasing volume of older recordings
can someone please help me make them a little louder? I think that would be no. You get the loudness by adding "distortion," usually compression or limiting. The older recordings were using the -17dB standard as the "VU Middle" point and that was fine until the Loudness Wars whe...

I couldn't remember how to do the octave lower thing. I have a machine that can do that on my keyboard.
Do remember that the effect doesn't track the real engine. Jacket-trembling rumble while you're idling doesn't always work, either.

Re: Hum on soundtrack
You want us to do it in Post, post production, but we're going to want to do it in Pre, as you're making the recording. There are filters that can remove hum from a recording, but they all cause damage. Any tones or sounds in the show that sound anything like hum will be removed as well. So what are...

You just went through nine time zones (plus yours) of forum elves thinking of possible problems and you have two likely prospects.
But only one of them is immediately solvable.

Re: I can hear only one headphone/monitor?!?!
i'm recording guitar and plugging in directly to the soundcard with a 1/4 adapter That's the phrase that pays. Depending on the adapter, and where you plugged it in, you are only playing to the "left" of a stereo recording. At your headphones, it will appear as a stereo show with half mis...
