Do you have Windows set to Auto Update? Windows can be set to automatically make system and security updates in the background. This occasionally leads to unpleasant surprises.

Oh, sorry. I didn't recognize the symptoms. You made a voice recording trying to record both sides of a conversation. Personal Recorders only capture your voice, not both sides. The far side is recorded as very low level, highly distorted, echo cancellation trash. It's not recoverable into speech. F...

You can be a correctly designed effect and still not be supported in Audacity. For example, if the effect requires serious graphic management, that's going to sail right out of the running.

How big is the room? USB has a length restriction. We had one conference room which required the wall-powered USB Hub trick half-way along between the conference room table and the actual computer. This effectively gives two USB cable restrictions end to end and it was enough for reliable operation....
