Audacity Projects will not (as a rule) open upstream. If you create a show in Audacity 2.1.0, it will probably not open in Audacity 1.3.8. I expect the other way to work. Audacity 2.1.2 should open anything.

That may be a little too simplified. A USB soundcard doesn't have a microphone. It would be really good to know the system as it is now used. If the performer is using a bad USB microphone, a new soundcard isn't going to do any good.

plugged into an output rather than input. That's the simple version. A headset connection has a stereo output for headphones, but a microphone input for the microphone portion of a headset.
