Re: background noise, street interviews, compressor settings

Background sounds are completely acceptable. What he said. One other poster did a cafe conversation recording and was crushed that the rest of the room and bustling activity could be heard. Given they did slightly overdo it, I had no trouble at all "being in the moment" for the recording....

Re: Record 2 independent inputs simultaneously with ZOOM H4n

When I ran into this, it turns out Zoom means 4 channels by counting the two built-in microphones and two optional devices. Optional Devices: One XLR microphone and one guitar. Two Guitars. Two XLR microphones. You never get two XLR microphones and two guitars. Manufacturers do this all the time. My...

Re: Suitable boom?

Is that the foam you're going to make into a Microphone Cave? That wouldn't work with the boom, although that's what my double-recording buddy (on the right) did in that illustration. Did I miss a construction step in there? There's a philosophy that says dampen opposing surfaces starting with the o...

Re: Suitable boom?

I didn't go the cast iron route. I bought an On-Stage Stands MS9701B. It's a heftier version of the MS7701B. http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/MicStdFBoomL Fully splayed out, it has a 24 inch footprint and remains dimensionally stable with some heavy microphones. That's an AKG on the end. http:...

Re: Music Too Soft for YouTube

Nobody posts gently recorded music directly for customer use. You are probably experiencing compression/limiting/loudness processing common to for-pay music. perfectly mastered recordings Only because you haven't heard the raw performance. I think it's a good bet you would be shocked if you heard th...

Re: Measure between -23dB and -18dB RMS.

Or is there anything else I can do? Did we lose you? Many people want us to tell them how to push a button and Everything will Be OK. Not so far. Everybody's voice, environment and microphones are different, but you all have to fit into the same sound standards. It's very much a "stop by the s...

Just to flesh it out a little, how are you getting your voice into the computer? Part numbers are good.

Re: Measure between -23dB and -18dB RMS.

English version of the ACX readings. Peak. Look at the blue waves on the timeline. The very tips of the waves are never allowed to go all the way up or down. That's overload (1.0 on the timeline -- 0dB on the bouncing sound meters). That can cause audible crunching and distortion. ACX doesn't even ...
