Re: conversion loss rates
That's an approximation. It could happen. It's the illustration of why it's a terrible idea to do production in MP3 or any other compression format. Successful modern compression algorithms can pay attention to content and it's not simple to publish a conversion table. As a fuzzy approximation, pick...

Re: new keyboard
No, you just need to do it the hard way. Play the MIDI software in your computer and record that. It's harder, but not impossible.

Just thinking about this. Don't modern machines also have a recovery partition?

Re: Will Studio Soundproof Absorption Foam help audio
Talk comfortably as you would speaking to another person. My impression is of an authority figure presenting instructions and information, not discussing the weather over cups of tea. He's not producing an audiobook. So it's much more performance art and I still think he's too close to the micropho...

Re: Audacity shutting down if I try to use effects
You may think the machine is plain and ordinary as long as you don't run anything, but it doesn't work like that. Skype, for one example, is pleased to completely reconfigure your machine to suite itself and just not tell you. And it's not the only one.
So that's what you're up against.

Re: Audacity shutting down if I try to use effects
Audacity was wonderful on my PC Which you stopped using because.........? I just do not have the time or energy to figure out how to use most of these. We would just kill to be able to help you, but if you're not starting from a relatively simple or standard machine, I don't see a lot of hope. We n...

Re: Will Studio Soundproof Absorption Foam help audio
I think you could improve the clarity by backing up a little. You are too close to the microphone and your breath sounds are causing muffling and dullness. Other elves will drop in and comment. I don't hear any significant echo or other room noises, so, no, I don't think adding foam or any other sou...

Re: Sound issues with multi track recording
Overdubbing is probably the first time your machine has had to play an existing track perfectly, with absolutely no errors, and record a new track perfectly, with absolutely no errors. So if the machine was just about hanging on with any one of those jobs, trying to do both at once may push it over ...

How far are you from an Apple Store? A trip to the Genius Bar is called for. Your Mac appears to be profoundly unstable for some reason. They can also offer classes in care and handling. It should be super difficult to crash a Mac down to restart.
