Re: Configure External Source
It's not unusual for a stereo system to insist on being stereo, but it's dead easy in Audacity to split them in two for production. Drop-down menu on the left > Split to mono. In the case of a single microphone, just [X] delete the track you don't want. They laughed at me when I bought a mono USB mi...

Did you ask them? You would think Skype would have the option of at least recording what you're hearing...

Re: Noise Floor, and background music
I hate myself when I get optimistic Beware of things that change by themselves. Do you use the computer for anything else, particularly anything with its own sound services? Skype does not Play Well With Others to borrow a report-card phrase. Do you let the computer do automatic updates? How full i...

Re: understanding NoiseGate
sound is short and loud And furry with a cold, wet noise. Rex is now part of your show, particularly if he went off during dialog. There's nothing quite like a quiet room. So you're doing something that sartre245 isn't, or other way to. We should get him to post some of the work and see what the di...

Re: Noise Floor, and background music
If you do change techniques, ACX is keen on having all your chapters match. So don't change anything in the middle of a book.

Re: Noise Floor, and background music
that was a 4 month learning curve. Wasn't that fun? You can do this with more abbreviated techniques, but you need the experience to tell you what parts you can leave out and which ones you need. I have a soundproofed third bedroom from an early kid that played drums. I'm going to buy that kid a Co...

Re: Tinny sounding dynamic mic
You may need several layers of felt to do any good. Duvetyne is superheavy black toweling (dual-velvet) and I'm not sure anybody could shoot movies without it. A good sub is furniture moving pads. Ignore the microphone and book. That's what's covering the table. http://kozco.com/tech/audacity/pix/Mi...

Re: Sequence of Normalize and Limiter
Instead of using a suite of individual tools, you might consider Chris's Compressor.

Re: Fix for a violin recording from an echo-y church hall?
I generally post that you can't take echoes out in post production. It's number one in the guaranteed ways to kill a show. The Four Horsemen of Audio Recording (reliable, time-tested ways to kill your show) -- 1. Echoes and room reverberation (Don't record the show in your mum's kitchen.) -- 2. Over...

Re: Sequence of Normalize and Limiter
I can think of a reason to use Normalize a lot sooner in the process. Normalize has the Remove DC Offset tools. DC Offset can make editing and production a complete nightmare and if it's not severe, it can be heard, but difficult to spot. http://kozco.com/tech/audacity/pix/DCOffset.jpg You can't app...
