Re: Please evaluate this sample
There is a trick to throwing a blanket over your computer. DO NOT BLOCK ANY AIR HOLES OR VENTS. Since it's the air holes and vents making the noise, you can work that out. I'll watch. It's not unusual for people to figure out a way to move the computer out of the room...or use a machine that doesn't...

Re: Something's messing with my mic levels
USB ports don't apply gain. Some apparently do. We've encountered several instances where changing the USB port was enough to solve overload and volume problems not attributable to straight 5v misbehavior. As you say, that should be impossible. Are you suggesting Audacity always converts to 32 bit ...

I didn't see any excessive sibilance. I think that's just the way you sound. But I did run three different programs to get rid of all the background noise. (attached) Then I made it a little louder. See how you like it. Compare it to the one you posted on-line. Do you have a window fan or air condit...

I have a MacBook Air about the same age. From the desktop, do you see the little black apple in the far upper left? Screen Shot 2017-04-05 at 16.40.13.png Click on that > Click About This Mac It should say OS-X and some version number. What's yours? I don't see any application called System Audio Re...

Re: low hum from soundcard to board
You're just begging for trouble. Converting from stereo to mono and unbalanced to balanced. I bet if you got the show from a laptop on batteries rather than a PC, all the problems would vanish. The ground or shield in a soundcard is not well-behaved. It's not ground and you can get into trouble assu...

I'll listen when I get back home. We like it when the poster includes a goal. "I want to read for AudioBooks."

Re: Something's messing with my mic levels
Narrate, but does it matter? It could. Straight narration can fall into the processing sweet spot. It levels out your voice and suppresses echoes and room noises. If you're not too picky about the compression artifacts, it can actually help. But you're right. Most USB microphones record low volume ...

Re: Microphone Recording and High Pitch Chipmunk Playback
Nobody would be shocked if the video camera produced a 48000 sample rate track. That's the common video sample rate. That's how I deliver sound when I know I'm working with a video production team.
